What We Believe

According to our Church of God in Christ Doctrine:
1. We believe the Bible to be the inspired and only infallible written Word of God.
2. We believe that there is only One God, eternally existent in three persons: God the Father, God the Son and, God the Holy Spirit.
3. We believe in the blessed Hope, which is the rapture of the Church of God, which is in Christ, at His return.
4. We believe that the only means of being cleansed from sin is through repentance and faith in the precious Blood of Jesus Christ.
5. We believe that regeneration by the Holy Ghost is absolutely essential for personal salvation.
6. We believe that the redemptive work of Christ on the Cross provides healing for the human body in answer to believing prayer.
7. We believe that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, according to Acts 2:4, is given to believers who ask for it.
8. We believe that in the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a holy and separated life in the present world.

Meet the Pastor

Pastor Joseph W. Lewis Jr. is a native of Pleasantville, New Jersey, and the youngest child of Elder Joseph and Evangelist Carolyn Lewis. Growing up, Pastor Joe attended Greater Faith Temple Church of God in Christ of Atlantic City, New Jersey where Supt. William E. Barton is the Pastor. His secondary education was through the Pleasantville Schools in which he graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1998. In high school, Pastor Joe participated in the Marching and Concert Band, as well as competing for the Track and Field team. His accomplishments in High School Track and Field were very auspicious which include the following: State Titles, two-time Meet of Champions winner, as well as being named to the All-American Team his senior year. This success led him to Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey on a Full Athletic scholarship.

Pastor Lewis is married to the love of his life, Fahtema Lewis and has four children, (Melvin, Jayla, Taylor, and Joseph III); his occupation is an Academic Instructional Coach at the Middle School of Pleasantville, where he coaches Math Teachers. He has a B.A. in Religious Studies from Montclair State University, and holds a Master of Theological Studies and a Master of Divinity from Liberty University.

Ministry is not something one selects as an occupation or career goal, but it is the thing you have to be called to do. Jesus said that we did not choose him, but he chose us (John 15:16). Despite Pastor Joe’s life ambitions, God had ordained his steps for ministry. In 2004, Pastor Joe was invited by his friend, Elder Major Mitchell, to visit a church called Living Water Family Bible Center in Carteret, New Jersey. This visit changed his life and he gave his life to the Lord weeks later. On January 1, 2005 Pastor Joe received the Baptism of the Holy Ghost. Within that year, three preachers confirmed his call to ministry. On April 23, 2006, Pastor Joe was licensed to preach by Pastor William Oatman, III of Living Water Family Bible Center.

In 2010, Pastor Joe was ordained as an Elder by Bishop Martin L. Johnson of New Jersey First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of the Church of God in Christ. On August 22, 2010, a hospital visit because of a tingling sensation in his hands and feet eventually left him paralyzed neck-down for 8 months, and also placed him on a ventilator for almost 2 months. The doctors are unaware how he contracted this virus/disorder, however the revelation from the Lord was that “It was all for God’s glory”. After being told that it would take several years in order to be close to 100%, the doctors were amazed that it took less than a year to fully recover and declared that Pastor Joe was a miracle.

Pastor Joe is currently the Pastor at Height Church. Along with this role, Pastor Joe serves as the Executive Assistant to Bishop Tyrone W. McCombs for the South Jersey Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of the Church of God in Christ. The scripture that he lives by is Philippians 3:14, “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
